How all started.
On the afternoon of 11 August 2024, a wildfire struck the northeastern region of Attica, Greece. The blaze ignited in Varnavas, northeast of Athens. Strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly, forcing the evacuation of numerous settlements and leading to significant damage to homes and forested areas. The fire continued burning, impacting large portions of northeastern Attica and posing a threat to northern districts of Athens.
The fire advanced southward, burning across three main fronts, including the village of Grammatiko, the town of Marathon, the coastal municipality of Nea Makri and Mount Penteli.
