Seasonal Firefighters on Strike

Greece recruits thousands of seasonal firefighters each year to assist with combating wildfires, especially during the summer months. In 2023, around 3,000 to 4,000 seasonal firefighters were hired, and this number is expected to remain similar or rise in 2024 due to the growing severity of wildfires caused by climate change. These seasonal roles typically last from May to October and involve firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency response tasks.

The recruitment process requires physical fitness and, in some cases, firefighting experience. Although the pay is competitive, the contracts are temporary, leading to concerns about job security. Given the longer fire seasons and increasing risk, Greece is likely to continue its reliance on seasonal firefighters, with potential for expanded recruitment in the coming years.
