Echoes of Resistance
In February 2025, Athens once again became the epicenter of public outrage on the second anniversary of the Tempi train disaster. What began as remembrance turned into a renewed movement, as thousands took to the streets, demanding justice and accountability for a tragedy that should never have happened. This photography project captures the raw intensity of the protests that erupted—an explosive clash between a grieving, enraged youth and a government still unwilling to take responsibility.
Through a series of diptychs, the images juxtapose the determination of the protestors against the forceful presence of riot police. They reveal the stark contrast: young voices demanding a future versus a state apparatus resisting dissent. The tension is palpable—hands raised in defiance, shields and batons poised to strike, fire and smoke engulfing the streets, walls marked with messages of rage and resistance. Each pairing of images creates a dialogue, forcing the viewer to confront the duality of power and protest, oppression and defiance.
But this project goes beyond photojournalism—it doesn’t just document events; it frames them in a way that invites reflection, analysis, and emotional engagement. By presenting these moments as diptychs, the project transforms fleeting coverage into something lasting. The images do not simply inform; they challenge.
This tension isn’t just about Athens in February 2025—it’s about a universal struggle between power and resistance. It asks us: What does resistance look like? How do systems of power react to dissent? And, most importantly, where do we stand?
Unlike images meant for immediate consumption and quick dissemination, this project lingers. It forces us to confront the urgency of resistance, to recognize that protest is not just chaos but a demand for justice. It serves as a visual manifesto—one that future movements can look to for strength.
Beyond the smoke and the clashes, this project is about the power of the masses. It captures not just anger, but the unyielding spirit of those who refuse to be silenced. It stands as both a testament to their fight and an inspiration for movements to come.
This is not just Athens. This is every city where injustice meets resistance.
